On the parietal side of the rolandic fissure lies the sensory cortex which receives information
about body position, muscles, touch and pressure from all over the body.
The temporal lobe is involved in hearing, perception and memory. It also plays a part in
language.
The occipital lobe is involved in vision. The primary visual cortex is at the extreme posterior
of the occipital lobe.
Located between the cerebral hemispheres and above the brain stem are several very
important "deep" brain structures. The Limbic system, the thalamus and the basal ganglia.
The limbic system consists of the hippo campus, hypothalamus and amygdala. The limbic
system regulates homeostasis, or the maintenance of constant body temperature, blood
pressure, heart rate, blood sugar levels etc.. The hypothalamus does this through its
connections to the autonomic nervous system. In addition, the hypothalamus controls the
pituitary gland which in turn is the master gland of the endocrine system. The hippocampus is
involved in memory storage. The amygdala coordinates the autonomic and endocrine systems
and is involved in emotions.
The basal ganglia are located on either side of the limbic system. They consist of five bi-
laterally paired structures: the caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus, sub thalamic
nucleus and substantia nigra. They are concerned with movement control, in particular
initiating movements. Unlike other parts of the movement system the basal ganglia do not
connect to the spinal cord but to the cortex by way of the thalamus.
Many neural pathways pass through the thalamus. Indeed, the thalamus is a crossroads for
most of the sensory and motor information that is relayed to the cerebral cortex. In addition, it
helps to initiate consciousness and make preliminary classifications of external events.
Thalamo-cortical pathways are thought to account for much of the rhythmicity seen in
brainwaves. Alpha waves rhythms are initiated in the thalamus and radiated to the cerebral
cortex.
